“Fortnite: Battle Royale” increases in popularity
Video games have come and gone, some more popular than others, but there currently is a game that is sweeping the world right now: “Fortnite: Battle Royale.” This co-op sandbox survival game has approximately ten million users who are either extremely upset or overly indulged in the game.
“Fortnite: Battle Royale” is a third person animated survival game that might remind someone of “The Hunger Games.” Starting out with a pickaxe for gathering resources, the gamer is flown over an island and is allowed to parachute down wherever he chooses. When he is down, the gamer has approximately two minutes until a storm begins to move closer to one randomly chosen spot on the map. The storm is an obstacle in the game. If a player is caught in the storm for too long, they end up dying. To win a game of “Fortnite: Battle Royale,” one team of two to four players must eliminate all other players until they are the last ones standing.
Recently, “Fortnite: Battle Royale” has been extremely popular and has been able to compete with PlayerUnknown’s: Battlegrounds (PUBG). These games have a shocking number of both similarities and differences. The PUBG vs. Fortnite rivalry is the gamer’s version of iPhones vs. Androids rivalry. Many fans of PUBG absolutely despise Fortnite for a few reasons including graphics, features, and gameplay.
Similarly, Fortnite gamers also have some issues against PUBG. For starters, the gliding action in PUBG is unnecessarily difficult compared to Fortnite. Furthermore, there is a limited amount of actions a player can do in PUBG. In Fortnite, gamers can gather resources to build different structures such as walls, floors, ramps, and pyramids. This feature on Fortnite makes it a challenge to knock another player down when he is constructing a labyrinth to protect himself. There are also objects that players can pick up such as spike traps, cozy campfires, and launch pads. Spike traps can only be laid on flat surfaces such as walls and floors. These traps are sprung open when an enemy walks in front or on them and usually does about 100 health damage to the user caught; the traps then reset for approximately 10 seconds. Cozy campfires can only be placed on floors that the user builds and heals 50 health for anyone around it. Launch pads are fan favorites as they can get anyone out of a sticky situation. When laying one down on a floor you build, you can jump on it as it acts like a trampoline and skyrockets you into the sky for you to glide to anywhere nearby, depending on the height from where you launch from.
There are many of newer features in Fortnite, such as the skins that users can buy using an in-game currency called “V-Bucks.” Everyone starts with a normal rebel-soldier type of skin but soon upgrade their avatars. Once to Tier 100 in the Battle Pass, the user is gifted with “The Reaper” skin. The Reaper looks like a man with a beard and a suit on, and it just looks very professional. While playing a round of Fortnite, there are common skins that can be seen throughout the match. Commonly used skins include the Dark Voyager, the Rust Lord, and the Reaper. The Dark Voyager is an all-black astronaut suit with bright orange lining on the suit that comes with a backpack with a heart monitor on the back. The Rust Lord is almost an apocalyptic type of character with armor that has an old rusty helmet and raggy clothes for armor.
In Fortnite, there is a multitude of weapons and perks that can be picked up from random places and from chests hidden around the map. Perks included, there are different items that boost health and the shield a user can snatch. There are bandages that boost someone up to 50% health and Medkits that boosts the health up to 100%. The bandages take about five seconds and the medkits take 10 seconds to activate. Small and large shield potions boosts your shield to protect yourself better. Small potions boost your shield up 25% and large potions boosts up 50%. There is also a single consumption item that is called the Slurp Juice. This juice slowly boosts the health and shield by 25%. Slurp Juice helps in tough situations when a user has little to no shield and little health left but is in the middle of a fight. It only takes three seconds to consume and can definitely be used in any situation.
“Fortnite: Battle Royale” is definitely one of the most popular games on the market. With new updates and a new season coming, Fortnite may continue to develop their system better and gain more users and players.
