Alyssa “Aly” Fehlauer is a senior at Sheridan High School. Her interests vary from sports and foreign language to religion. Her energy is bright, and she always has a smile on her face.
Not only is Fehlauer involved in cross country and track, but she’s also taking on her third year of Spanish Club as co-president alongside fellow senior Abrianna Doke. In the club, members learn about different holidays and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries. Fehlauer partakes in the club’s interchanged lunches, where they get together with Spanish speakers and practice speaking both languages. Roy Doke, Spanish teacher and the Spanish Club advisor at SHS, recognizes Fehlauer and her passion for the club. “She’s pretty busy; she’s on top of it all the time,” he said. “She’s the head honcho.”
Fehlauer takes her interest in Spanish outside of the club as well. She has an internship at Sheridan Junior High School where she helps translate for Spanish-speaking kids who are learning how to speak English. The internship has furthered her interest in Spanish culture.
Her appreciation developed during her eighth-grade year. Fehlauer believes God gave her the passion for this culture, and she admires the beauty and selflessness of it. She plans to go to the University of Wyoming after high school to continue pursuing the language. Her interest in UW stems from the school’s foreign exchange program. Through this program, Fehlauer hopes to travel to South America for a few semesters. “It would be really cool to get my Spanish speaking skills up,” she said. Fehlauer strives to major in both a teaching and Spanish degree to obtain her certificate in English Spanish Learner. With this certificate, she wants to go into a career that helps Spanish speakers learn English.
Fehlauer grew up in a Christian household, but it wasn’t until her seventh-grade year that her religion strengthened. During the year, she realized God was more than an idea, and instead, she believes he is a personal being. “He actually wants to know you,” Fehlauer said. “He walks with you every single day, and that has really impacted me.” Fehlauer also believes that God gave her the passions she has.
She is involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where they strive to strengthen their faith with support from coaches and fellow athletes.
Fehlauer is also a member of English teacher Matthew Pruitt’s Bible study, where she builds deeper connections with her fellow classmates. Each week, they share a prayer request, and together they pray about their struggles and hardships in life. Through the group, Fehlauer is continuously growing her faith, and learning. “You never stop learning about God,” said Fehlauer. The group welcomes everyone and meets at 7:45 a.m. on Monday mornings, in Pruitt’s room.
Fehlauer has also been a part of the National Honor Society for the past two years. The group consists of people who enjoy volunteering for the community. “I really enjoy getting to give my time to the community that raised me,” said Fehlauer.
Outside of school, Fehlauer pursues many hobbies. She enjoys crafts, making gifts for people, crocheting, and ice skating. “My friend Alexa, she always complains about her nose being freezing, so last Christmas I crocheted her a nose warmer,” said Fehlauer. “She thought it was really funny.” A big part of her free time is spent being social. “I love people, just hanging out with any people I know is really fun,” she said.
Fehlauer is close with her family. Her brother David, a sophomore, is in the Spanish Club with her. “He is a wonderful guy,” she said. “He cracks me up all the time.”
Fehlauer said her parents are humble and she admires that trait.`
She is the daughter of Tim and Julie Fehlauer.
