The Sheridan Lady Broncs soccer team ended their season with a fourth place finish at state, a great result for a team of mostly underclassmen. The team won their first round game but fell in the next two, showing promise for next year on a team that will return the bulk of their starters.
In the third-fourth place game, the Lady Broncs faced Laramie. Falling behind early, the Laramie Plainsmen scored four goals and won the game 4-0. Despite the loss, the girls received fourth place.
Earlier, the girls lost to Cheyenne East in the semi-finals 3-1. Cheyenne East was the eventual champions, beating Cheyenne Central for the champions. East was a very talented team that included the Gatorade Player of the Year, but Sheridan put up a good fight and gained valuable experience. Maddy McClure scored the only goal in the second half.
In the first round, the Lady Broncs scored a big upset against the number one seed from the West region, beating Green River 2-1. Green River had won the West Regional Championship but Sheridan overcame an early goal from Green River, equalizing on freshman Robbi Ryan’s goal, tying the score before halftime. In the second half, the winning goal came after a cross which Ryan headed in for her second goal, advancing the team.
The Lady Broncs will return many starters for next season, including two all-state players, freshman Ryan and sophomore Emily Julian. Also all-stating for the Broncs was defenseman senior Celena Kelly. McClure said about the season that “We had lost a lot of seniors and were really young and had a lot of growing to do. Next year we have great potential for the season.”
